Function
Washers distribute the clamping load of a bolted or screwed connection over a wider bearing surface, protect the surface of the joined parts, and (for spring/serrated types) help resist self-loosening under vibration.

General mechanical engineering, construction, machine assembly, and any bolted connection requiring load distribution or vibration resistance. Selection depends on bolt diameter, required surface pressure and the presence of dynamic loads or vibration.
