Friction springs “RF” are safety components used wherever sudden forces and kinetic energy must be absorbed, or where high spring force is needed within relatively small dimensions. They consist of outer and inner rings that contact each other on tapered surfaces via a special lubricant. Under axial load, the conical surfaces slide against one another and each ring deforms elastically — the outer ring expands, the inner ring compresses — producing spring stroke. The circumferential stress is distributed almost uniformly across the loaded element, making friction springs lighter than comparable spring types. A distinguishing feature is strong frictional damping, absorbing roughly two-thirds of the introduced energy. Friction springs can be combined for overload protection, displacement compensation, and energy absorption, individually or together. As an alternative to individual friction springs, complete ready-to-install industrial buffers (“IPA 1” to “IPA 4”) are also available, differing in plunger and flange design.
